What you need to hear
I’m the worst person to ask: is online business easy. Why? Because I won’t give you the answer you want to hear. If you’re already getting annoyed at me. Good! Because now you’ll hopefully be more receptive to the answer you need to hear.
The reality is, it’s not a yes or no answer. Yes or No, may have been the answer you’re hoping for. And it makes sense, that seems to be the way of the world right now.
Hell yes! Online business is the easiest way to make money since buying real estate in the 90’s.
Or Hell no! Don’t touch online business with a barge pole, that’s like that bit-coin crypto thingy.
Don’t worry. I get sucked into this vortex far too often than I’d like.
When the truth is it’s neither. Unlike the polarised world we live in. There are variables, nuances and specifics that need to be taking into consideration.
So to understand if an online business is easy or not, let’s look at four variables:
- Depends on who you ask
- Your hunger to learn
- Your experience level
- Do you have a framework
Depends on who you ask
If you ask an internet guru – they’ll tell you what you want to hear. If you want it to be easy, they’ll tell you its easy. But remember, their job is to sell their programme. If they’ve been around long enough, their programme will probably work. The key is to understand, that you will have to do the work. Their programme will just provide a plan of action.
You’ll get a different response if you ask someone close to you who’s remotely negative. I dare you to ask them what they think about online business. Whether they think it’s an easy way to make money. They’ll most likely tell you its a scam, it’s not something you should get into, it’s too difficult to compete with Apple and Google, blah blah blah.
Sorry, had to tune out that negative person.
The final person to ask is someone who’s run or running a business. They’ll either say it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Or if they’re candid they’ll say:
Starting a company is like eating glass and staring into the abyss. – Elon Musk
If that doesn’t turn you off. Nothing will.
So, in summary, ask around. Just be sure to ask a varying sample of people.
Your hunger to learn
Here’s another quote because why not:
‘What comes easy won’t last long and what lasts long won’t come easy – Wise anonymous person
If we were sitting over coffee I’d echo this quote and expand on it slightly. If you’re doing online business right (whatever that means), it will never be easy. Because learning new things constantly isn’t easy. Implementing what you think is a great idea and then killing it that very week because it didn’t work, isn’t easy. Failing lots of times isn’t easy. But in the long run, it will be worth it.
Wow! Depressing much. (It gets better I promise).
Instead, accept it’s not easy. Accept that it won’t always work. Accept it will take a long time. Then you can focus and fall in love with the process of learning and doing.
Here’s a final quote to paint the picture in a different way (last one I promise):
Become a millionaire not for the million dollars, but for what it will make of you to achieve it – Jim Rohn
What Jim Rohn’s saying is, the money isn’t the result. It’s your personal growth. It’s who you’ll be in ten years time because of your hunger to learn and do.
So if you have a hunger to learn. Just remember, it won’t be easy. But with the right approach, it will feel easy.
Your experience level
You may have run an offline business already. So everything I’ve spoken about already – you’re hopefully nodding your head because you get it. If you’re reading this and you’re experienced then for you it’s simple. You just need to re-tool. You don’t need me to tell you it won’t be easy.
However, if you’re reading thins and you have little to zero experience in the business. Then online business will have a steeper learning curve. This is because online business is still a business. Don’t panic because the good news is – you won’t have picked up all the bad habits an experienced business person has. You’ll be looking into the future with a fresh pair of glasses.
Have an online business framework
Imagine trying to escape out of a pitch-black house (Scary!) that you’ve never been in before. To say it’s difficult is an understatement. I looked up synonyms to the word difficult and the word unimaginable better describes this challenge.
Starting an online business without a framework in mind is like trying to escape a pitch-black house. Unimaginable.
I should be clear here, it’s possible. But you’ll be making it as hard as possible for yourself. You’ll stumble to success and it will take you way longer than it should have. Especially if you’ve nailed your product/market fit.
So by having a framework such as the BATON system (I’ve linked up our marathon free course, but you can also learn about the BATON system elsewhere on the blog) that we teach. The process becomes a lot easier.
This means, regardless of whether or not you’ve been in the house before. Having a framework in place will be like switching all the lights on. You’ll still need to find your way out of the unfamiliar territory. But you’ll actually see what you’re doing and where you’re going.
Is online business easy: summary
In an ideal world, we’d sit down over coffee and have a conversation. I’d ask you a few questions to understand where you are right now. Where you would like to be. And based on that, start to paint the picture of what the next 3 to 5 years will look like whilst you build your online business.
But until that time here are the big takeaways:
- It depends where you are right now – who you have around you, your hunger to learn and your experience level
- Having the right business framework in place – BATON is our preferred (because we created it obviously)
Here’s the biggie I want to take away. I can discuss all the variables on what makes an online business easy or not till I’m blue in the face.
The one element which has no variables is. YOU have to do the work.
